Making Maths Fun For Young Children

Maths. It’s a word similar to dentist in that it has the ability to strike fear into people at its mere mention. When I think back to Boo’s age I didn’t have the best relationship with maths . It wasn’t until I had a fun lesson one rainy winters day with our school priest who taught us how to do our nine times table the easy way – two columns of ascending and descending names from 0-9 and voila you have a fool proof way of always knowing your 9 times table.

After that there was no stopping me when it came to maths, not because I’d suddenly developed Einstein type maths skills overnight but because I’d acquired confidence and in time it became my favourite subject. Fast forward to today and my love of maths from childhood is still with me – I’m a die hard believer in mental maths and have been determined to make it fun for Boo.

Maths doesn’t need to be a subject that is shied away from – I try to teach Boo that maths is one of the best subjects as there’s always an answer at the end of the challenge.

Finchley Nursery agree that as important maths is it should never be hard instead of fun so have come up with their tops tips when it comes to doing maths activities with your child.
