Thomson Family Resorts: The Mummy and Boo Lowdown

Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave last week me and Boo jetted off to Majorca with Thomson to see what their Thomson Family Resorts had to offer.

Despite living not a million miles from Gatwick, Thomson very kindly arranged for us to stay at the Sofitel Hotel (it’s literally attached to the North Terminal – complete with covered walk way!) as our Monday morning flight was at a pre dawn 6am! Let’s just say that a pre holiday hotel has most definitely made it onto my ‘must have’ holiday checklist, just a little touch that makes traveling with a toddler a little bit easier.

It was mid morning by the time we got off the plane at Palma (Boo was a happy little girl as we went flying high in the sky and I had a smile plastered on my face owing to the fact I was able to enjoy a Starbucks Via coffee on the flight!)
Ok so I know this isn’t going to go down well but as they say the truth hurts: It was hot, like really hot. Glorious sunshine and not a cloud in the sky!

After a transfer of an hour we arrived at our resort and hotel The Protur Aparthotel Bonaire a stunning resort which is a Thomson Family Resort. All rooms are in fact an apartment with main bedroom, living area with 2 sofa beds, dining table and kitchenette with ample equipment to cook a meal. You see that’s one of the first advantages I found out about Thomson Family Resorts; whilst we we’re experiencing all inclusive, guests had the option of self catering, half board and all inclusive – keeping in touch with Thomson’s promise to families that they can provide/organize as little or as much of a holiday experience.

Can’t beat palm trees outside your balcony!

It wasn’t long before we ventured out of our rooms and set out to explore what the resort had to offer. We soon discovered there was enough to keep us busy for a few weeks let alone the four days we were staying, where to start?! With hungry tummies we headed to the main buffet restaurant to meet up with the other Mallorca Mummies. Now I don’t know about you but I’ve had some rather interesting encounters with all inclusive buffets so I was interested to see what Thomson had to offer: well all I can say is wow, wow, wow! Great choice of both traditional Catalan dishes and some more familiar to the British palette, all though really well cooked and presented; they’re big on choice and that includes the dedicated childrens’ buffet area, over the next few days I made a concerted effort to try as much of the buffet to offer – I mean who can resist freshly cooked pancakes in the morning!

Unfortunately due to a complication from Boo’s operation we had the opportunity to try out the medical services on the first afternoon. The Thomson holiday advisor was so helpful and arranged for a doctor and a nurse to visit us in our room within an hour – as a parent knowing that facility exists is a real comfort and is just another example of how Thomson live up to their family resort name. The doctor was polite and friendly and after a quick look prescribed some medication and in just over a day Boo was back to her toddler self!

Thomson Family Resort has so much to offer over the rest of our trip we enjoyed the pool (correction I enjoyed some adult time while Boo got familiar with the crèche – more on that later this week), the pool bar – because everyone deserves afternoon cake! And the à la carte restaurant on the Tuesday evening; not to mention the beach and of course Boo’s favorite part of the holiday: Thomson the Dog who she is utterly in love with and hasn’t let go of him since we’ve returned home!

Their literally is so much to tell you about our holiday experience at Thomson Family Resorts that I could write a book, so over the coming week or so look out for more blog posts which will see me talk about specific parts of our holiday that made for unforgettable memories, someone please take me back!

A massive thank you to Luke and Claire from Thomson who went above and beyond to make sure that we as a group and our children had the best time possible!

A Hard Week and a Shed Load of Saying Sorry

The last week has been one of the hardest ever. Lots of pain, lots of tears, lots of unknowns. Boo’s operation was textbook if not distressing but the 12 hours that came after were a rollercoaster of emotions and worry. Her heartbeat was so high it had the doctors worried; we still don’t know exactly what happened but hopefully over the coming weeks we’ll find out more.

Only Boo could rock a pirate hospital gown and ballet shoes on the way down the theatre!

I’m not going to lie my world stood still – no e-mails, no calls, no blog; I didn’t even answer my phone it was as if I were looking in on my life. Monday morning brings a heap of me saying sorry: sorry to work, sorry to family, sorry to friends. Even if I was here physically (apart from work of course) none of me was around.

The hardest part was having to leave Boo with Grandma while I drove a 500mile round trip as part of moving house on the Thursday (is it wrong to say I quite enjoyed driving a van!!) It wasn’t easy but I did it with the help of some great friends.

I also had to make the difficult decision to pull out of the Nike Run To The Beat half marathon on Sunday, I had so wanted to run/walk/crawl but deep down I knew I just wasn’t ready and if I’m honest I really didn’t’ want to leave Boo for half a day especially when she’s so anxious and needs reassurance that they’ll be no more ‘doctors taking blood away from my blood hands’. I’m sorry to VitaCoco who gifted me the place.

Monday brings a new week, Boo is back at nursery although I’m fighting the urge to ring and check every 5 minutes. She’s tougher than her petite frame lets on but she’s still my baby Boo.

We have lots to look forward to: finally moving in to our new home this week, Boo’s Auntie Grace turning 21 and thanks to Thomson we’re off to Majorca next Monday so the next 2 weeks are looking great and beating the pants of last week!

  • Boo’s Operation: An Update

    Boo’s Operation: An Update

It was Boo’s operation today, she didn’t like it (find me a 2 year old who does!) but seemed to be recovering well eating toast and chatting about going home. Then she took an unexpected turn for the worse so we’re staying put for another night while they monitor her heart and bloods.

Deep down I know whatever it is that caused the panic is fixable, Boo on the other hand is scared and has had enough of hospitals and wants Mummy’s bed. Tomorrow is a new day with new hopes of going home.

For now all I can do is give Boo lots of love and reassurance and wait. It’s going to be a long night.

  • Boo’s Operation

    Boo’s Operation

I’ve been putting it off, writing this post; I should have written it weeks ago but somehow seeing it in black and white made it all the more real. Today Boo’s being admitted to the Royal Free Hospital ready for an operation tomorrow morning. It’s no secret that she’s had a fair few health hurdles many of which we think our down to her being premature although no one is sure, and that’s the problem – how do you treat something when there’s no certainty as to what it is.

Understandably Boo isn’t too keen on doctors especially as she’s had more blood tests than a toddler’s had hot meals! So I got a couple of books that help explain in the voice of Peppa Pig and she seems a little less scared plus she’s excited to compare stethoscopes with her consultant – lucky man!

My bag and her Trunki are packed (Jeez – who knew they could hold so much stuff!!!), we’ve got the postcode ready for the satnav (it’s not our local hospital) yet deep down I feel as ready as I don’t know what, I’m just not ready. I know thousands of children a year have an anesthetic and they’re fine, is this just mummy panic, am I normal? I think going back to a hospital reminds me of when she was born and all the panic, fear and worst of all uncertainty.

Like I’ve always said I’m blessed to have a beautiful, happy daughter who has a few health hurdles and the quicker we get it sorted the better, so time to shake my doubt off and crack on with supporting Boo over the next 36 hours.

  • Nike Run To The Beat: Operation Yummy Mummy Just Got Crazy

Nike Run To The Beat: Operation Yummy Mummy Just Got Crazy

It’s 29 days until the Nike Run To The Beat half marathon. Why is this important – well until 2.30pm yesterday afternoon it wasn’t however I received an e-mail to say I’d won a competition and the prize was a place on the half marathon. I was and still am in shock. Yes you’ve read right – I’m running a half marathon in 29 days!

I entered the competition on my commute into work (you know the ones in the paper that say e-mail your details and a winner will be picked); the week before the prize was a pair of festival tickets and I wasn’t so lucky plus I for some random reason thought the half marathon was in November so even if I did win, it would be fine – just another goal for #operationyummymummy – plus it wasn’t like I was going to win or anything, surely!

The competition was run by Vita Coco so I will also be receiving a hefty delivery of coconut water which I’m actually looking forward to trying – but hang on aren’t I forgetting something? Oh yes it’ll be the small matter of running 13.1 miles in 29 days!!!!

You can see the recurring theme – 13.1 miles is a long way I only trained for a 10K and yet still managed to acquire a pretty ugly (and now partial) toenail as a result – what the heck is going to happen after this little adventure?!

In the last 24 hours I’ve come up with my very own plan – I know I can complete a 10K so it stands to reason that if I reduce my effort by 30% and couple it with walking I should be able to complete the course in 3ish hours. No drama – but and this is one humongous but my plan aka pretty please with all fingers crossed will only work if I train at maximum effort and take on the right nutrition plan. I suppose this is the part where I should come clean and admit I know a small amount about each – already I can tell this is going to be an interesting training plan!

I’ve had mixed response from the people I’ve told so far – my family really don’t want me to do it and think I’m bat crazy to even think it’s possible without serious injury. However a couple of people have been really encouraging and to be honest that’s just what I need. There is no guarantee that it will be ok, there is no guarantee that I won’t pick up a serious injury, there is no guarantee that I’ll finish the race, heck I can’t even promise that I’ll make it to race day without a catastrophic injury from training but what I can do is give it my all and make sure every run, every weight session and every boot camp counts.

There are no certainties with any of this – as I write this I keep shaking my head thinking what are you doing you crazy crazy lady. But hey #operationyummymummy is all about my limits and where’s the fun without the challenge? So who’s with me for the mayhem of the next 29 days as I train for a half marathon – oh yes the great big 13.1 miles of elephant in the room!
