Christmas is so close you can almost touch it – it won’t be long before you’re in a mince pie coma luxuriating in the new cashmere socks you received from Aunt Gertrude 😉 But with Christmas comes the inevitability of January and a hive of resolutions and productivity and for bloggers that often means SEO. I am by no means an SEO expert (I’m always learning!) but as an oldie when it comes to blogging – nearly 10 years – here are my top tips for bloggers when it comes to SEO:

Make a Plan

I suppose this stems from my PR/Marketing days when it was drummed into us that without a plan even the best ideas in the industry were doomed to fail. What is exactly what you want to get out of SEO? What searches do you want to appear on page 1 of Google for? Don’t put all your time and effort into ranking highly for the best prams on the market when you’re a big advocate for babywearing. Do your research, become an expert in understanding your target audience and what they want and what they’re searching. Google Analytics is great for gaining a deeper understanding of behaviour and trends.

Networking

I promise I’m not a dodgy used car salesman with this one – but networking is still king in business no matter how you approach it. Without getting too technical, Google adds more ‘weight’ to sites that are linked to by established sites (this can also work in the same vain but negatively if you’re linked to by less than desirable sites, so something to bear in mind.) One way to achieve this is to take part in guest posts, it’s a natural – and often fun – way to broaden your blogging circle while working on the SEO for your site.
