    The Gruffalo Live

“A mouse took a stroll in a deep dark wood, a fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good…” I only need to say these words and Boo will scamper and fetch her beloved and somewhat tattered copy of The Gruffalo. Since it’s publication in 1999, The Gruffalo has become part of modern day childhood so what better treat to kick off the Christmas holidays than a trip to Vaudeville Theatre in London to watch The Gruffalo Live.

Boo didn’t need any persuading as we headed up on the train, she loves the Gruffalo and sat patiently waiting for the show to start as we chatted about her favourite part (apparently that’s not fair, and she loves it all!) The show was brilliant, with a great cast who managed to fit in a few jokes for the parents… All I say is Whack’im is the funniest snake you’ll ever meet.

The Gruffalo Live is like the book, it has something for everyone: from a 4 year old who knows it word for word and you can see the magic glisten in her eyes to parents who take pleasure in making such fun memories, thanks Gruffalo for a splendid end to what has been a fantastic 2015! Boo couldn’t agree more and what better way to celebrate than with a Shirley Temple at Byron after the show!

  • 4 Ways to Feel Confident When Returning to Work After Having a Child

4 Ways to Feel Confident When Returning to Work After Having a Child

Returning to work after having a child certainly creates anxiety. The longer that you’ve been staying at home either as a new mum or having expanded the family with a second or third child, the more concern it creates.

However, don’t despair. It’s possible to find some ways to feel confident. Try these 4 on for size…

    Give Yourself a Self-Talk

If you’ve been on maternity leave and are returning to the same role as before, acknowledge this. Know that you successfully worked in the role before and are capable of doing so again. Yes, it will take a bit of time to get back into the swing of things, but that’s to be expected. Your employer will anticipate that’ll be the case too.

When you either weren’t working or left before having a child, then that’s more worrisome. However, think back to the previous positions that you’ve worked in. Know that you’ve been smart, adaptable, and useful in your various roles. Nothing will have changed so drastically in the working world to make it impossible to get back up to speed.

Fix Your Smile (If It’s Needed)

If you’ve always been self-conscious about your smile, then it may be time to consider some dental work. Doing this can fix a long-standing issue like crooked teeth, a chipped tooth, or add a touch of whitening to brighten them up.

A veneer can cover over a previously chipped tooth. Whitening from a dentist is more effective than over-the-counter solutions too. Also, practitioners offering orthodontics Enfield can provide various types of braces including fixed ones and Invisalign, a modern option that slides on/off to avoid wearing them for business meetings.

Look for Greater Flexibility with Your Work Schedule

Even if the company mostly has people working from the office, there are exceptions.

Some staff members may work a few days at home per week and a couple in the office too. Others may work from home all the time, taking virtual meetings on Zoom or Microsoft Teams. It does depend on the business and how public-facing it is.

Talk to the manager about making part-time work arrangements if you feel full-time will be too much. See what options are possible for working partly at home. This will help to reduce any childcare expenses too.

    Shop for New Office Attire

If your budget will stretch to it, then update your office wardrobe with fashionable choices.

Old pre-baby bump business attire might not be suitable. Get some new outfits to wear to the office or for the occasional meeting. Even if you work from home, you’ll still need to look presentable on Zoom. A new look or three will give your confidence a boost, especially if some of the staff haven’t seen you in a while.

When doing a few things to bolster your confidence, returning after time off to have a baby, is manageable. Co-workers are likely to rally around and welcome you back too.

  • Continuing The Christmas Tradition With Pines and Needles

Continuing The Christmas Tradition With Pines and Needles

Last year Pines and Needles introduced us to the joy of a real Christmas tree, and we duly fell in love with having a real tree of our very own. Fast forward to the beginning of the month and yet again the lovelies at Pines and Needles sent us the most beautiful tree.

    Pines-and-Needles-Christmas-Tree-delivered-to-your-door

Yes, I know, that word you’re looking for when you see our tree is magnificent . All 6ft tall and nearly as wide of the Nordmann Fir is as perfect as last year. With the delivery process being as smooth as ever – you’d be hard pushed to get me to drag my tree home after discovering the joys of having it brought right into your living room… bliss!

Pines and Needles are celebrating 20 years and have become the premier Christmas tree supplier online in the UK. I’m no expert when it comes to picking the perfect tree and that’s what’s brilliant about Pines and Needles; there’s no need to go and pick the tree yourself – although you’re more than welcome to visit one of their 20 stores. It’s a really simple process from picking the size of your tree, arranging delivery and you can even book a pick up in the new year; and because Pines and Needles grow all their own trees on their own plantations in Scotland in the most sustainable manner you know it’s the best tree available.

True to their word, this tree hasn’t dropped at all, and we’re half way through December, I knew the quality of the tree was so good from Pines and Needles that I opted to have it delivered at the beginning of the month where I would usually hold out until at least the 18th! As I sit and write this on the sofa with a mince pie I’m transported to our own little slice of Mummy and Boo Christmas…

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas...

There’s still time to order a Pines and Needles Christmas tree direct, or head to one of their stores; for the most beautiful tree that will remain a focal point for festive memories for years to come… Merry Christmas!

Disclosure: We were sent a Christmas tree and wreath for review. No payment was received and all opinions are 100% honest.

  • Flu: The Single Parents Worse Nightmare

Flu: The Single Parents Worse Nightmare

If you’re wondering why it’s been quiet on the Mummy and Boo front it’s because we’re sick, mark our door with a red x and steer clear. Boo’s just getting over pneumonia – it’s her first of the season which considering her health hurdles is great and shows how well the prophylaxis antibiotics are working. And for me well according to the GP today I have real life actual flu.

After feeling horrible for the past ten days I decided to ring the doctors to see if I could get an appointment this side of Christmas, so you can imagine how shocked I was when I was told to pop down half and hour later. Fast forward to seeing the GP and after a million and one questions he diagnosed me with flu. I laughed, don’t be silly I said, I’ve had the flu jab, he just smiled and said true but you still have the flu.

I was offered a two week sick note and advised to have a minimum of five days bed rest; then I really started to laugh. Being self employed and a single parent means there are no sick days or time off. Apparently there’s no shortcut to recovering from the flu but I’ll tell you what, there’s also no shortcut to parenting on your own unless you count sacrificing the housework.

    Single-Parenting-When-Ill-Sucks

So I came home from the doctors, cooked a beef casserole, cracked on with some admin, did the school run, listened to Boo tell me about her day, listen to her read (oh did I fail to mention that Boo’s totally nailed reading like a boss…BOOM), had dinner, winged it at bedtime with a completely made up story about Fifi the astronaut; and here I am sat in bed, blogging getting my prescribed bed rest.

Following doctors’ orders is all well and good until you’re a parent then you substitute bed rest for Lucozade and buckets of tea – plus the odd Karamel Stroopwafel -and the realisation that flu sucks and there’s nothing you can do about it.

  • The Tiger Who Came To Tea Live

The Tiger Who Came To Tea Live

Chances are there’s not a single one of you reading this who haven’t read The Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith Kerr; it’s an institution, a sure winner no matter how many times I suggest it as Boo’s bedtime story. But can you imagine it as a play? We were invited to the Lyric Theatre last month to watch the story of The Tiger Who Came To Tea jump to life.

“Will there be a real tiger Mummy?” it’s a fair question when you’re four and I have to admit I was a little dubious as to how they were going to portray the tiger on stage; children aren’t suckers when it comes to theatre and the suspension of disbelief still has to be achieved if the audience no matter how young are to have an authentic connection with the story.

The production was lovely, and I use that word wholeheartedly, from curtain up until the final applause, Boo was mesmerized and engrossed on a level I didn’t think would be possible. The tiger is in fact a costume, but one that works so well and really does look like the character from the book. There’s lots of singing and apart from a few tweaks the story is very much the same and just as well received.

    The Tiger Who-Came-To-Tea-Live-at-The-Lyric-Theatre

The Tiger Who Came To Tea gets a big thumbs up from both me and Boo; it’s got the winning combination of a great story that is well and truly loved with a considerate production which helps to keep such a classic so fresh and appealing – a perfect excuse for a family trip to the theatre.

The Tiger Who Came To Live is at the Lyric Theatre until the 10th January 2016.

Disclosure: We received complementary tickets for the performance. All opinions are 100% honest.
