    Kaleidoscope’s SS16 Collection

With Christmas out the way, it’s time to ignore the impending freezing weather that’s about to hit and turn our attention to Spring Summer 16 and what better way than a first look at Kaleidoscope’s SS16 collection.

I’ve written before how Kaleidoscope are fast becoming a destination for women’s clothing; from fast fashion, classic pieces and not forgetting their show stopping party wear collection.

When I stopped by the Kaleidoscope SS16 press day it was lovely to catch up with the team, especially Kirsten Emery who’s passion for well designed and made fashion is infectious. I was surprised at just how diverse the SS16 collection is: from island inspired festival looks, lived in chic denim right through to preppy nautical looks to carry you through any warm and sunny occasion.

What sets Kaleidoscope and its SS16 collection apart from others is the cut and fit. Their clothes are not only designed to fit and flatter but their sized realistically; We all know all too well how frustrating it is when the dress label says one thing but the way it strangles you as you attempt to pull it down past your neck says another.

Kaleidoscope aren’t a new brand but are definitely one that should be on any fashion conscious woman’s radar: They seem to have the holy grail of women swear – great fashion that’s wearable; from design and fit, quality and affordability.

Now all that’s left it to wait for the ghastly cold to disappear ready for a fashionable SS16.

  • New Year’s Eve as a Single Parent

New Year’s Eve as a Single Parent

Forget Valentine’s Day, the most awkward day of the entire year to be single is New Year’s Eve. Let me be more specific, whilst being single on New Year’s Eve is the land of opportunity for meeting someone new; as a single parent it’s the one time of year when you’re confronted by your lack of relationship status.

No one ever asks me what I’m up to on Valentine’s Day, why would they? Plus as a parent it doesn’t really have the same meaning but fast forward to the end of December and the 31st is almost the litmus test for you and your year. It’s the build up, people ask what your plans are for seeing in the New Year and if I’m honest the answer is nearly always as awkward as the question.

Boo always spends middlemas and New Year with her Father, which is the longest break I get and it’s so needed: a chance to catch up and attempt to get ahead with work, have a good old sort out, sleep and rediscover the joys of listening to music at 11pm at night while I potter round the house.

We’re fortunate that Boo attends one of the best Catholic primary schools in London but it does mean that single parents are a little thin on the ground – coupled with working from home, my circle of friends is made up of married parents and couples. I’m not as close to my single friends as I once was because let’s face it, unless you’re a parent you don’t really understand the whole child = end of social life equation.; and I get that it’s a completely normal transition.

There is a part of me that would be happy to pretend it doesn’t exist; stock up on carbs, watch a few films and have an ever-welcome early night. As much as it sounds oh so appealing I’m fully aware that as a single twenty something (albeit with a Boo) this option is a bit too cat-lady-esque and does nothing for my sanity when opportunities for a night out are as rare as having the bathroom to myself.

    Being-a-single-parent-on-New-Year's-Eve

We come together to celebrate the old and ring in the new, yet as the singular adult in our household it can get a bit lonely even in a crowded room of adults, predominantly couples who quite rightly are pretty happy and no one wants to feel like a third wheel or even worse the token singleton… Trust me it’s not a good look at all.

This year is no different from the last three, 24 hours to go and a complete lack of plans means it could still go either way and I suppose I’m ok with that. I am in no way sad that I am single, only reminded of how defining it can sometimes be, even more so when you are a parent.

    Happy New Year x

  • Keeping Christmas to Ourselves: A Digital Absence

Keeping Christmas to Ourselves: A Digital Absence

It’s Boxing Day night and I’m sat here with my glass of Baileys after laying with Boo while she fell asleep and I can honestly say this Christmas has been one of the loveliest and most peaceful and I think I know why… a 48 hour social media hiatus.

48 hours may not seem like a lot to many people, but when your main job is blogging and being a digital influencer it’s kind of a big deal; I must admit I hadn’t planned it – in fact I was looking forward to sharing snaps from Christmas morning of Boo opening her presents and of our Christmas lunch at my Mums with family as I have done for many years previously, way before I began blogging.

But as I played Father Christmas on Christmas Eve and artfully demolished the mince pie and milk I decided not to share a snap on Facebook. I don’t really know why I just had the urge to keep Christmas all to ourselves this year; I wanted to be fully present, not missing a single moment. I embrace social media for all it’s merits and you will often find me shouting the benefits of an online presence and sharing ordinary moments of our life is a great snapshot into the world of Mummy and Boo. So why was Christmas 2015 different?

2015 has been a rollercoaster of a year, a true adventure for us and apart from the broken arm we’ve had an absolute blast; it’s been a year that has seen so many changes for Boo seeing her transform from an inquisitive preschooler into a confident little lady and I’ve shared our journey; the good, the hilarious and the sometimes ouch (think the arm) so why am I so reluctant to share our Christmas?

    Unplugged-Christmas-Mummy-and-Boo-Blogging

Yesterday was full of present opening, turkey, laughter, lovings, competitive games of Monopoly and not a single hashtag or checking to see the reach of a post of number of retweets and it was glorious… I did think about taking one ‘perfect’ shot to encapsulate the Corriette Christmas but I really didn’t want to style a shot when the only thing I should be styling was Queen Elsa’s hair! I took more photos yesterday and today than any other Christmas – not one is picture perfect, they’re blurry, too light, too dark but they capture our Christmas and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

It’s important that I point out this is no way me complaining or calling foul of social media’s intrusion; I rely on and sometimes orchestrate social media for the benefit of this blog and I am completely aware that I willingly offer an insiders view of family life – something that I am comfortable with and fully in control of. I am also aware that a fair few of you reading this will have clicked through from Facebook on the link I will inevitably share and the irony of this. Don’t worry I’m not about to quit social media for good, 48 hours has been enough.

The longer I resisted the ever increasing red notification pop up on Facebook (it’s currently at 117 as I write this – wish me luck getting through it) the easier it was to digitally switch off. 2016 is set to be our biggest and best – just you wait and see – but if Christmas has taught me anything it’s that a little bit of digital wilderness is good for the soul.

  • 10 Ways To Kickstart Your Life In January

10 Ways To Kickstart Your Life In January

When it comes to the new year, it’s safe to say that we all want to be able to set new goals and enjoy the next twelve months. This is something that so many of us do every year. It feels so nice to be able to think about what we want to achieve and go into the new year with optimism. However, based on the last new year, we may all be a little wary about that. It’s safe to say that things didn’t really go to plan this year. No matter what goals we all had in place, we definitely won’t have been working on many of them. But that’s okay. It’s not always easy to focus on that when there are more serious things going on in the world. However, you may find that things are starting to change.

    alphabet tiles spelling out January

Although we are still currently very much amidst a pandemic, it’s looking like there is an end in sight. When the world is slightly more protected, it’s going to be much nicer for us all to be able to relax a bit and go back to focusing on the different goals that we have in place. So why not start to think about that now. When it comes to being happy, you’re going to want to start that with a bang. Sure, this year you may have put some of your needs and wants aside, but you don’t have to do that forever. It’s nice to start the new year off on the right foot, so why not look to kickstart your life this January? Here’s ten ideas to help you do exactly that.

    1. Set Intentions

To start with, you may find that one of the best things you can do is set some intentions. If you know that you want your month or your year to go a certain way, then you’ll want to make sure that you’re conscious about doing this. By thinking about what you want to achieve and setting that intention, it’s more likely to happen. It might help you to write these intentions down too.

    1. Plan Head

Then you’re going to want to start planning ahead. It’s good to have a think about the things that you want to happen during the year. Sometimes, it feels like there’s so much time in the year and that you can generally get to different occasions and then plan for them. But in order to make sure that you make things happen, you’ll want to start thinking ahead now.

    1. Have Goals

From here, you’ll want to turn those ideas into goals. When you have concrete goals that cover off what you want to achieve, it’s going to help you to be able to make something happen. So think about what you want to do with the year. Whether it’s to go on holiday, starting a business, or changing something about yourself. It’s good to have a goal.

    1. Be Kind To Yourself

You also need to make sure that you’re being kind to yourself. It’s all too easy to let yourself get stressed or to beat yourself up about things – but it isn’t good for you. So one of the best things you can do for yourself this January is be kind to yourself.

    1. Manage Your Mind

As a step on from this, you might want to think about managing your mind a little better. It’s all too easy to let yourself get bogged down and lost in your thoughts. But this can become an unhealthy downward spiral. Instead, looking to be more present and conscious can help.

    1. Get Healthy

Next, you might want to think about your health. Are you as healthy as you can be? Or have you been neglecting yourself a little lately? If so, then you might want to think of ways that you can maintain your health. Working on your nutrition and aiming to ensure that you are feeling good in yourself, sleeping well, and calm and healthy is going to make such a difference to your life.

    1. Stay Active

As a step on from that, it’s nice for you to think about staying active and keeping yourself in good shape. We all know just how important exercise is and for you to ensure that your body is healthy. Yet, we don’t always want to be able to do it. So it’s nice to know different ways to move more every single day. Sometimes, these little additions to your life can be all you need to feel a lot better in yourself.

    1. Create A Career Plan

From here, you’re then going to want to think about creating some kind of career plan for yourself. If you know that you have goals and want to be able to get somewhere with your career, it’s nice to be able to have a plan in place so that you can become the successful woman you want to be. Sitting down and working out what you need to do to get there can be really inspiring and motivating for you too.

    1. Work Towards Something Big

It could be that you really want to do something big this year. If you know that you want to buy a house or get a new car, maybe that’s what you should be focusing on this year. So you’ll want to start looking at your savings or what sort of financing you can get, even if it’s bad credit loans, and work that out. Then you can have it in mind that you’re working towards getting this sorted ASAP.

    1. Rekindle Your Relationships

Finally, you may find that you actually want to start thinking about the different people in your life too. Now, this doesn’t necessarily refer to romantic relationships (although they can be accounted for here too). Instead, you are going to want to look to your family, friends, colleagues – those that you’re close to. If you don’t feel like you’ve been able to see them much this winter or even throughout the year, it could be the perfect time for you to see them more and try to spend more time with them. Even if it’s via telephone for now!

  • The Gruffalo Live

    The Gruffalo Live

“A mouse took a stroll in a deep dark wood, a fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good…” I only need to say these words and Boo will scamper and fetch her beloved and somewhat tattered copy of The Gruffalo. Since it’s publication in 1999, The Gruffalo has become part of modern day childhood so what better treat to kick off the Christmas holidays than a trip to Vaudeville Theatre in London to watch The Gruffalo Live.

    Boo-at-The-Gruffalo-Live

Boo didn’t need any persuading as we headed up on the train, she loves the Gruffalo and sat patiently waiting for the show to start as we chatted about her favourite part (apparently that’s not fair, and she loves it all!) The show was brilliant, with a great cast who managed to fit in a few jokes for the parents… All I say is Whack’im is the funniest snake you’ll ever meet.

    The-Gruffalo-Live-London

The Gruffalo Live is like the book, it has something for everyone: from a 4 year old who knows it word for word and you can see the magic glisten in her eyes to parents who take pleasure in making such fun memories, thanks Gruffalo for a splendid end to what has been a fantastic 2015! Boo couldn’t agree more and what better way to celebrate than with a Shirley Temple at Byron after the show!
